Fortunately, most physicians take this tradition and their professional obligations seriously, and overt discrimination is rare. Evidence suggests, however, that even medical professionals are susceptible to implicit biases based on race, social class, sex, weight, and myriad other factors that may affect the care they provide.5 Thus, although we should condemn all types of invidious discrimination against patients, we should be particularly vigilant against the sort of subtle discrimination that can fly under the radar.

The Old World and New World alphaviruses use different virus-specific proteins for induction of transcriptional shutoff.

Alphaviruses are widely distributed throughout the world. During the last few thousand years, the New World viruses, including Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) and eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV), evolved separately from those of the Old World, i.e., Sindbis virus (SINV) and Semliki Forest virus (SFV). Nevertheless, the results of our study indicate that both groups have dev...

Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus capsid protein inhibits nuclear import in Mammalian but not in mosquito cells.

Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV) represents a continuous public health threat in the United States. It has the ability to cause fatal disease in humans and in horses and other domestic animals. We recently demonstrated that replicating VEEV interferes with cellular transcription and uses this phenomenon as a means of downregulating a cellular antiviral response. VEEV capsid protein w...

Noncytopathic replication of Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus and eastern equine encephalitis virus replicons in Mammalian cells.

Venezuelan equine encephalitis (VEE) and eastern equine encephalitis (EEE) viruses are important, naturally emerging zoonotic viruses. They are significant human and equine pathogens which still pose a serious public health threat. Both VEE and EEE cause chronic infection in mosquitoes and persistent or chronic infection in mosquito-derived cell lines. In contrast, vertebrate hosts infected wit...

Vaccines and Therapeutics to the Encephalitic Alphaviruses

This article is a review of vaccines and therapeutics in development to the encephalitic alphaviruses which includes eastern equine encephalitis virus (EEEV), western equine encephalitis virus (WEEV) and Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus (VEEV). The encephalitic alphaviruses are endemic within regions in North and South America. Hosts are normally exposed after being bitten by infectious mos...

Encephalitic Development in Alphaviral Infection

Viruses are currently the most common cause of encephalitis. With more than 20 viruses known to cause human encephalitis, arboviruses, arthropod-borne viruses, represent a significant number of emerging infectious diseases both in the United States and worldwide. The Alphavirus genus in the family Togaviridae contains three viruses capable of causing human encephalitis: Venezuelan equine enceph...
